It seems to me that, if Excel 2016 by default stores only the relative portions of the paths to linked files, then a simple change of USB's drive letter between two different computers shouldn't break the links.Ĭan anyone suggest what I may be missing? Otherwise, I'm starting to sense this may be a bug that Microsoft needs to fix.

The only thing that changes from PC to Laptop is that the OS has assigned a different drive letter to the USB drive. In fact, the linked file and the sources files continue to reside on the same USB drive, and in the same directory I won't claim to be an expert, but everything I read in that article leads me to believe that Excel 2016 should behave in regard to my issue exactly asĪlso, in this situation, the linked file isn't being moved away from source files that are in a central (or networked) location. So, this appears to be an Excel 2016/Windows 10 issue, and not an issue of migrating between Excel 2016/Excel 2010 or Windows 10 Pro/Windows 7 Pro. Until recently, I've been running Windows 7 Pro and Office 2010 on both PCs. Not to go into too much detail, but I find it helpful in my billing activities (using Outlook Journal) to be able to discern on what PC I was working on the file at a given time. On my laptop PC, that USB is drive letter On my desktop PC, that USB is drive letter L. These files are saved on a USB removable storage drive. I'm using an Excel workbook that has links to multiple external Excel workbooks. I've searched this forum to no avail on this issue, but if I've missed another thread with a solution, please point me in that direction.
